Saturday Breakfast with Jason McCrossan is broadcast on 106.9 SFM in Sittingbourne & Swale in Kent as well as everywhere else on www.sfmradio.com.

Halloween 2014 with Dr. Richard Sugg

The name Halloween (originally spelled Hallowe’en) is a contraction of All Hallows Even, meaning the day before All Hallows Day (better known today as All Saints Day), a Catholic holiday.

Dr Richard Sugg is a lecturer in English studies at the University of Durham who has just completed volume one of Faces of the Vampire called the (The Real Vampires) – which will be published next year. He spoke to Jason on Monday Matters.

Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh on 13 November 1850. His most famous works are Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Every Saturday morning on the 106.9 SFM Saturday breakfast show Tranquil Time is broadcast at around 07:50 featuring poems from various poets. Today’s poem is by Robert Louis Stevenson and read by Gill Fraser Lee who tweets from @AHappyflower.

Matthew Ward reads ‘Hunter Trials’ by John Betjeman

When John Betjeman’s Collected Poems came out in 1958 they made publishing history and have since sold over two and a quarter million copies.

But Betjeman was not only a poet. Through his broadcasting and journalism he opened people’s eyes to the value of the buildings and landscape around them and became Britain’s grand champion of its heritage.

On the 106.9 SFM Saturday breakfast show with Jason McCrossan – Tranquil Time at 07:50am is our poetry spot – a time to allow the stresses and strains of the day to wash away.

Hong Kong’s Umbrella Revolution

Hong Kong Democracy ProtestThe demonstrations in Hong Kong also known as the Umbrella Movement or Umbrella Revolution, began in September 2014 when pro-democracy campaigners, angry at China’s plans to vet candidates when they hold elections in 2017, protested outside the government headquarters and occupied several major city intersections.

Dr Pak Lee is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent and spoke with Jason McCrossan.
