It’s International Mandela day – after 9pm Jason speaks to a biographer of Nelson Mandela – Martin Meredith – about the Mandela’s early life, later life and struggles which saw him go from spending 26 years in a prison cell to becoming the first black President of South Africa.

The Prime Minister says she would be prepared to authorise a nuclear strike.  Theresa May’s made her first Commons speech since entering Number 10, during a debate about renewing the UK’s nuclear deterrent – we’ll discuss the pro’s and con’s with Green Party MP Caroline Lucas and former First Sea Lord and former Security Minister, Lord West.

Our featured artist tonight is Don Henley who is 69 on Friday. The drummer, singer, composer, and co-founder of The Eagles who has also pursued a successful solo career, releasing hits like The Boys of Summer.

The year 1985 was designated as the International Youth Year by the United Nations.

Soviet leader Chernenko dies at 73 and is replaced by Mikhail Gorbachev, 54.  Rock Hudson dies of AIDS at age 59. He’s the first major star to fall victim to the disease.  Madonna launches her first road show, the Virgin Tour.
Dozens of top-name musicians and bands perform at the Live Aid concerts in Philadelphia and London. The shows benefit African famine victims.  With the availability of relatively inexpensive laser printers and computers, tools for desktop publishing begin to be commonly used.

Jason McCrossan presents the final Saturday Breakfast show of 2014. Jason is joined by Kyra Cross bringing the latest travel news and listener updates and there are the usual features including Tranquil Time with Gill Fraser Lee – the last poem of the year is called Winter Landscape by John Berryman; Feather Barkweasle makes her last appearance of 2014; there is a Christmas edition of Pick of The Number One Pops – where all the songs were number one on the Christmas days of 1965, 1975, 1985 and 1995.

In the final hour – Stu James joins the show to challenge Kyra for the Christmas Crown as we play Blockbusters with the late and great Bob Holness.
